Today in class we watched a short film, "Klansville USA" which discussed the rise of the Klu Klux Klan during the Civil Rights Movement. It focused on the leadership of Bob Jones and the huge impact he made in the organization, growing the group to 10,000 members. The Klan is known for its violence against blacks, however, during this era while Jones was the Grand Dragon it was not about violence but more about being heard and pushing for everything to stay the same. They honestly believed that blacks were the reason for the destruction of the nation but could never believe that they were the ones that tear it apart.
The film was very interesting to watch for me because Bob Jones is actually from my hometown of Salisbury, North Carolina. So to watch this and realize this happened in my backyard and places I'm very familiar with puts into perspective how real this really is. To think that theses things happened not to long ago makes me feel so uncomfortable. A family friend have told me that he has actually seen a group in all white costumes walking the woods, which is insane to think there are still members of these group that has such a negative reputation.
This class made me realize that what we are learning is still so relevant to today. Which, to me, is so appalling because all men and women should be treat with equal opportunity and respect. We are seeing the affects of events like this film even today and it is hard to wrap my brain around that idea.

This picture is a picture of downtown Salisbury- I had no clue salisbury had history of the Klan which just blows my mind.
